Survey finds business leaders 'committed to tackling climate change'

02 Jul 2019

A survey carried out by the Institute of Directors (IoD) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has suggested that business leaders are 'committed to combating climate change'.

The survey, which polled 1,985 businesses, revealed that nine out of ten directors believe that business leaders need to take action to mitigate the effects of climate change. Four out of five directors said that their firm is already taking action to tackle climate change.

The IoD and the CMI stated that the net-zero target can only be achieved 'with the support of leaders and managers from organisations of all sectors and sizes across the UK'.

'Long-term sustainable success is the basic principle of good corporate governance, so it's no surprise that directors overwhelmingly feel it's one of their responsibilities to tackle climate change,' said Edwin Morgan, Interim Director General of the IoD.

'When it comes to addressing the risks posed to the environment, the impetus to change must be shared by everyone. Members of the IoD and the CMI clearly agree they must play their part, and it is vital that leaders in business of all shapes and sizes contribute to this ambitious goal.'

The IoD and the CMI have urged the government to produce and promote 'practical guidance' for businesses on combating climate change.
